The tradition of art in India visualizes the love adventures of gods and their female friends, because it acknowledges that sex is the supreme fact in life, which provides the urge to procreate and maintain the species.
This is concealed like lightning in a dark cloud, and in its glow is the birth of art, literature, and science. The sexual union among two lovers is the most exalted experience in life and in mutual ecstasy the liberation of the soul from the narrow self takes place. This is the supreme experience of lovers as well as the mystics. That is why in describing the union of God and soul, the extremely beautiful imagery of man and woman is employed by mystic saints and artists.
This is why we can see that the classification of love into the carnal and the spiritual is so arbitrary and unwarranted, because that so called spiritual love has its own roots in the so called physical love. That is one of some reasons why art sanctifies human love and places it on a par that is even with divine love. This is where that we can find sacredness in the wedded to sensuous joy.
Not only in spiritual art, but also in material art forms, is where the spirit and the body are regarded as two separate entities. Spiritual art is not gloomy, cold, and forbidding, but is an form of art which is a happy blend of the sensuous and the spiritual in a beautiful combination. The spirituality is not chilled by an asceticism, which is disdainful of the female loveliness and the delights of love. In fact, it is spirituality that is very much based on flesh and blood, but it is a form of art which glorifies the female beauty and revels in the loveliness of the splendid female form.
The knitting together of form and color into a coordinated harmony is the hallmark of this art form. The form and color are so well blended that the effect is almost musical. To be able to achieve such an amazing harmony, the artist will use both line and color in these paintings. The line which he will use is known to be the musical rhythmical line, which will express both the movement and the mass, which represents the flow and the ardor of impassioned love.
The type of line can be regarded as the golden rule of art. This line is more distinct, sharp, and wiry the bounding line, and is the more perfect work of art. The less keen and sharp the line is, then the greater is evidence of weak imagination. There is a rhythm that these dancing lines create, which is a pure limpid harmony. That is why these marvelous art paintings are so comforting and why are as soothing as the concertos of Bach and Mozart. This line is effectively supplemented by colors of the blues, yellows, greens, and reds, which are the pure colors of earth and minerals, which shine like jewels.
