You could lament endless about how culturally speaking our brains rotting away, but it beats hoeing in the fields from dawn to dusk, so I say lets just label spending all Friday night watching a Gilligans Island evolution and move on to more important things. Like for instance the Gilligans Island theme song did you know they were only supposed to be on a three hour tour? Are you even eligible for the Montgomery Bill after only a three hour tour? Themes songs bring up so many important issues

I Dream of Jeannie Who said nothing good ever came from the bottle? And you got to give up for a show that somehow managed to get away with saying yes, master during a decade of civil rights upheaval. An appropriately bouncy theme song for a show about a girl whose only outfit was a belly dancer costume, you cant listen to the tune without being reminded of well the only thing guys think about anyway.
The X Files - Where would Lost be without this show? Lost I say! Still, even putting aside programming with muddled mythology, this moody but inquisitive theme has its own place in the pop culture pantheon. The memorable echo on the track was actually an accident, as composer Mark Snow banged his arm down on the keyboard in frustration over not being able to find the right sound, only to find that was the right sound. I guess the truth really is out there
Sopranos Woke up this morning, got myself a gun. Could there be a better opening line for a show about the Mafia in suburbia? While the group Alabama 3 is so obscure they could have been whacked and we wouldnt have noticed this grizzled no nonsense track manages to be an icon without being the least bit hokey, a rarity for a TV theme song.
The West Wing The key piece of information about this stately theme was it was written by a man named W.G. Snuffy Walden which is endlessly fascinating. Did his mother actually name him Snuffy? Did the other kids in school pretend not to see him? Can he in fact tell me how to get to Sesame Street? We need a congressional hearing on the issue.
Addams Family vs. The Munsters Since lets face it; this was basically the same show so choosing between the two will always come down to the theme song. While the Munsters had a silly score that instantly brings to mind actor Fred Gwynnes goofy, oversized bobbling head, this contest isnt The Addams Family theme is more famous than the actual show even if its not the real lyrics people remember. Who knew uncle Fester did not in fact fart in the opening credits.
Miami Vice With respect to the OC, this was the best show of all time at making songs hits, and while Phil Collins In the air tonight and Glenn Freys You belong to the city were huge, nothing was bigger than Jan Hammer theme, one of the few instrumental theme songs ever to hit number one on the pop charts. The pink shirts and pulled up collars of the show now make us cringe, but the music is still as good as it ever was.
American Idol The show has basically replaced Miss America as our countrys favorite pageant, and while maybe not on the level with William Hungs rendition of She Bangs, the American Idol theme has a special place next to that here she comes, Miss America song and the Monday Night Football theme. When you think about it, this is really a song for losers, as hundreds of thousands each year are summarily rejected, but the song still has become the embodiment of the American dream.
